Career Building Essentials: 
Developing Creative Resumes
and Effective Interviewing Skills

 Writing a really good resume is worth the time and effort job hunters need to give.  It requires following some rules and avoiding common pitfalls.  The workshop described below will review the rules and point out the pitfalls for participants.  An effective resume may get a jobseekers’ foot in the door, but the interview will be the deciding factor for getting the job.  Once they have constructed a winning resume that presents a positive image to a prospective employer, participants will learn how to prepare for an interview, practice interviewing.  As part of their preparation, participants will learn techniques to research positions.  In addition, participants will learn the necessary steps to take after an interview has occurred.

The workshop has been designed as interactive, using discussion, small group support process, and experiential activities.  Participants will leave with concrete information on how to develop and construct a resume, interview with a prospective employer and follow-up an interview. Participants will walk through resume construction, and experience an interview via small group role play.

Learning Objectives:

Understand how to project a favorable image to prospective employers.

Describe for employers the knowledge and job skills that are applicable to the position.

Distinguish among the most common resume formats and select the appropriate one for the job for which they are applying.

Identify information that should and should not be included in a resume.

Explain the relationship between resumes and interviews.

Use a resume and cover letter as a personal advertisement and catalyst for career mobility.

Prepare for the interview by employing techniques to learn more about the job and the agency.

Cope with a difficult interview.

Describe for employers knowledge and job skills that are applicable to the position.

Recognize questions an interviewer cannot legally ask and how to respond.

Interpret the meaning of non verbal cues.

Cope with vague questions.
